When you hear the phrase "around the dinner table." What comes to your mind? Do you think of a delicious feast, with strong aromas? Perhaps its a early morning coffee with a pastry. No matter what comes to mind there is something innately comforting when we think about the dinner table.
Growing up with a single parent, I am fortunate that they made a point to spend time at the dinner table. Sure there were some nights where we enjoyed our meal next to the television, but it was the 90's and it was common, but the dinners I remember most are the ones where we sat at the table and just enjoyed conversations.
From Mickey Mouse pancakes, to bread and pasta I remember so many meals that bring a warmth to my heart, but food is not the only thing that I think of fondly, board games were equally as memorable.
I blame my mom for my love for board games. Growing up we played The Game of Life, Monopoly, Connect Four, all of the classic board games. These games brought a friendly competition to my world. It taught me that no matter what you are doing, the important part is to make sure you were having fun. It truly became a fundamental mindset to who I am today.
As I stated before, I grew up with a single parent with a very strong family support system. Grandparents who would take care of me while my mom was at work, and an uncle who helped us out for many years. The dinner table was a very important part of keeping us all together. My family to this day still has a weekly dinner where the table has expanded to about four full length tables.
Whether it is sitting at the table to enjoy a meal, or to simplely sit down and chat I think it is important for us as humans to experience those moments. Remind ourselves that we are all going through life and experiencing different things.
